People often postpone getting legal help because they do not know a lawyer or are unsure of how to choose one. It is important that you seek competent legal assistance before your situation becomes a serious problem.

The Nassau County Bar Association established the Lawyer Referral Information Service (LRIS) in 1954 to provide personalized assistance to help you find the right lawyer for your legal issue. Attorneys on the LRIS panel practice throughout Long Island and have experience in all areas of the law. All panel members carry professional liability insurance and are in good standing with the New York State Office of Court Administration.

You can be referred to a lawyer by calling the LRIS during our business hours or completing an online referral form. The nature of your situation is quickly evaluated by trained staff. You will be given the name of a private attorney to contact to set up an appointment.

The LRIS has bilingual staff and Language Line interpreters available to help our non-English speaking callers. We will attempt to find an attorney fluent in the caller’s language.

The initial half-hour consultation with the lawyer is $50 for most matters. Be sure to share documents and information related to your legal issue at this meeting. The consultation is meant to assess whether the attorney can assist you, and for you and the lawyer to discuss the cost of their service.

The LRIS does not guarantee an attorney will accept your case for representation. If you cannot afford a lawyer, you can be referred to an agency or other organization that may be able to help you.
